Absolutes are highly concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from botanical materials such as flowers, leaves, resins, and woods. They are considered among the most precious raw materials in perfumery due to their exceptional olfactory fidelity. Compared with essential oils, absolutes capture a fuller and more authentic representation of the original plant, making them indispensable in fine fragrance and luxury formulations.
Extraction Process of Absolutes
The extraction of absolutes is designed to preserve the most delicate and volatile aromatic molecules that are easily destroyed by heat or steam distillation. The process typically involves four key stages:
Solvent Extraction
Fresh or dried botanical material is gently extracted using a non-polar organic solvent. This step dissolves aromatic compounds, waxes, pigments, and resins from the plant matrix, producing a semi-solid material known as a Concrete.
Ethanol Re-extraction
The concrete is then washed with food-grade ethanol, which selectively dissolves the fragrant components while leaving behind most of the waxes and insoluble substances.
Cold Filtration and Dewaxing
The ethanolic solution is chilled and filtered to remove residual waxes, resulting in a clarified aromatic extract.
Vacuum Concentration
Finally, ethanol is removed under reduced pressure at low temperature, yielding the finished absolute — a highly concentrated, true-to-nature aromatic material.
Applications
Absolutes are indispensable ingredients in the creation of premium and luxury fragrance products due to their exceptional aromatic depth and authenticity. Their primary applications include:
- Fine Fragrance and Niche Perfumery: Absolutes are widely used as heart and base note materials in high-end perfumes, where they impart naturalness, richness, and long-lasting character.
- Personal Care and Cosmetics: In premium skincare, haircare, and body care formulations, absolutes provide sophisticated scent nuances and enhance the overall sensory experience of the product.
- Aromatherapy and Specialty Blends: Due to their complex and well-rounded fragrance profiles, absolutes are used in professional aromatherapy, massage oils, and bespoke fragrance compositions where emotional depth and authenticity are required.
