Carrier Oils

Carrier oils, also known as base oils or vegetable oils, are natural fixed oils pressed primarily from seeds and constitute a common constituent of topically used preparations. They are a mixture of heterogeneous lipids composed mainly of triglycerides and a lower concentration of components such as free fatty acid, mono and diglycerides, sterol, phosphatides, fatty alcohol, and lipid-soluble vitamins. Carrier oils are very safe and are often used as diluents for essential oils prior to topical application. In addition, studies have shown that they may impart a topical permeability enhancement effect. Unlike essential oils, carrier oils do not contain a strong aroma, although some carrier oils, such as olive, have a mild distinctive scent. Carrier oils also do not evaporate like essential oils, they leave a permanent oily mark on the paper. As a unique class of oils, carrier oils are widely used in skin care, hair care, cosmetics, aromatherapy, and other fields.

Common carrier oils

Carrier oils commonly used in daily life are described below.

  • Olive oil

Olive oil is a liquid fat obtained from olives. It is commonly used in cooking: for frying foods or as a salad dressing. It can also be made into hair oil and emollient oil, thus making the hair and skin soft.

  • Coconut oil

oconut oil

The molecules of coconut oil are much smaller than other carrier oils, almost as small as those of essential oils. As a result, coconut oil penetrates the skin very easily, allowing the essential oil to be absorbed easily.

  • Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is the liquid derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant. The composition of jojoba oil is closest to our sebum. They are easily absorbed by the skin and do not clog the pores.

  • Sweet almond oil

Sweet almond oil

Sweet almond oil is an optimal carrier oil as it has natural moisturizing properties that are suitable for all skin types. Sweet almond oil is also very mild in terms of aroma, which makes it a good choice for pairing with essential oils that are easily masked.

  • Rosehip oil

Rosehip oil comes from the fruit and seeds of the wild rose bush. It is one of the best carrier oils for skincare and promotes collagen levels and elasticity in the skin.

Rosehip oil

  • Grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil is produced as a byproduct of making wine. It is one of the lightest carrier oils. Grapeseed oil is not only rich in vitamin E, but also has a silky texture, making it a perfect choice for skincare.

  • Argan oil

Argan oil is a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree that is endemic to Morocco. It helps improve skin elasticity, soften wrinkles, and fine lines, and restore nutrients to skin cells to treat a range of skin conditions.

Argan oil

  • Avocado oil

Avocado oil

Avocado oil is very commonly used in skincare or makeup. It is heavier and thicker than many other carrier oils because it has a lot of fatty acid content. If you have trouble with dry skin or wrinkles, please use avocado oil.
