The triangle test is a discriminative method that has many uses in sensory science. First, it can be used to measure whether there is an overall difference between two products. Second, it selects qualified panelists for a particular test. Finally, it can determine whether changes in processing or composition have significantly altered the product. Since the triangle test is easy to perform and can provide simple and straightforward analysis, it is used not only for a multitude of products from the food and drink industry such as broccoli, mustard, wine and vinegar, but also from the household and personal care industry, such as fragrances and many more. If you want to ensure the quality and consistency of your products, please feel free to contact Alfa Chemistry. We have the ability to provide you with a professional triangle testing service.
How we test
In a triangle test, an assessor gets presented three samples which come from two products. Two of the samples are from the same product, the third sample is from the other. There are six possible orders for each group of samples: AAB, ABA, BAA, BBA, BAB, and ABB, which should be randomized across all assessors to prevent psychological errors due to position, as often the temptation is to perceive the second sample as the different one. The assessors are asked to taste/evaluate the products in the order presented from left to right and identify the "odd“ sample. If a significant number of assessor are able to select the ‘odd’ sample, then the samples are considered to be significantly different from each other.
Advantages of the test
Identifying consumer preferences and perceptions of food and non-food products is critical for manufacturers, retailers and marketing specialists. The advantages of the triangle test we offer are described below
- Our tests can significantly reduce the cost of producing a product, allowing customers to substitute ingredients or otherwise change their formula without affecting the consumer evaluation of the product.
- Our tests can help customers determine if there are identifiable differences in their products over time.
- Our tests can help customers identify the consistency of their products under different conditions, including temperature or packaging changes.
- Our tests will help you answer whether the changes made to the product produce a significantly different flavor or aroma from the control group. This will help customers develop new products or improve existing products.
- Our tests use trial sizes and processes to generate sufficient good quality data for statistical analyses. From these analyses firm conclusions can be drawn and unbiased information provided to enable customers to make the correct business decisions.
