Natural Aroma Chemical Citronellal as a Key Compound in Organic Synthesis

Lenardao, Eder J., et al. Tetrahedron 63.29 (2007): 6671-6712.

Citronellal is a cheap, readily available and versatile starting material for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral compounds. The total synthesis of natural and unnatural compounds starting from citronellal can be divided into three categories: (1) the synthesis of pheromones, (2) the synthesis of cyclic and polycyclic compounds, and (3) the synthesis of acyclic compounds.

(11R,17S)-11,17-Dimethylhenconane, the communication pheromone of the ant Camponotus vagus, was obtained in high enantiomeric and diastereomeric purity from (R)-citronellal 1 by convergent synthesis. This was accomplished in two fragments, one starting from (R)-citronellal (1, fragment I) and the other starting from (R)-citronellol. Wittig olefination of aldehyde I with the resulting phosphite II gave the desired pheromone (11R,17S)-11,17-dimethylbenztriacontane (2) in an overall yield of 21%.

Product: Carnosic Acid (3650-09-7)

"Our research institute recently purchased Carnosic Acid for an antioxidant research and development project, and the results are simply outstanding! This product is extremely pure and has shown amazing stability in experiments. It can effectively inhibit free radicals and extend the shelf life of our biological samples by at least 30%. In the past, we used other antioxidants and were always worried about degradation, but Carnosic Acid's active ingredients remain perfectly intact, and the repeatability of experimental data has been greatly improved."

Product: Sodium gluconate (527-07-1)

"As a food processing plant, we purchased Sodium gluconate as an additive for the tea production line, and the results are really beyond expectations! Its chelating ability is so strong that it can effectively prevent deterioration caused by metal ions, allowing our white tea to maintain a fresh taste and natural color during processing and storage. Consumers report that the tea is purer and safer."

Product: ORANGE TERPENES (68647-72-3)

"Our company specializes in the production of natural flavors. This time we purchased ORANGE TERPENES for new product development. The aroma effect is amazing! Its citrus aroma is pure and lasting, and it can be perfectly integrated into the perfume formula, which not only enhances the overall fragrance layering, but also enhances the natural attributes of the product. Laboratory tests show that volatility and stability are better than similar products on the market, and the aroma loss rate in production is reduced by 20%."
